Don't get me started on house flipping. OK, now that you did...

Being involved in real estate for the past so many years with my wife, we've seen the "Flip this house" trend come and progress. And honestly it is a tempting endeavor. It has made many people money either by the investors themselves, authors on the subject, tv shows, real estate agents, etc. But the problem we see too often is the shortcomings investors take end up hurting the owner the most.

If I knew how or had the means, it would now be my goal to start a tv show about "unflip this house" or "fix this flip". Home buyers (especially first time home buyers) need education when looking at houses that have been renovated for quick sale.

First off I am discouraged in even pursuing this as networks currently have too much of their lineup dedicated to "flip" types of programming and this idea definitely conflicts with their currrent rush of income. But on the flip (haha) side of this, they also have a huge source of programming subjects for me. I'd love to get their "flipped" home list and start calling those people and see how many are now dissatisfied but are no longer being filmed.

Flips many times do look gorgeous. But an investors buys it to be "flipped" within a couples months. Do you really think that investor is looking 5, 10, or 15 years down the road when the pricey quality is evaluated against the temporary cheaper route?!

Do you want to buy a temporary facade or do you want a solid home for the future???

And to those that are getting offended by any of this, I either say thank you as you do quality work and I am not talking about you OR I say, too bad I'm not sorry for exposing you secret.

And I'm not going to get into the risks of flipping a house as that is a whole other discussion. You can do your own searches on the internet for that.

 

If you are interested in flipping houses, please, please work with a reputable contractor or even call us to be your consultant - and do the job right!

 

**By "flipped" I include those shows or people that do a quick makeover on a house, or limited budget remodel, iknvestors that do upgrades to sell a house for a profit, etc. No discrimination; I include all. I believe "Flip This House" is a show on A&E and "Flip That House" is on TLC and my usage of the terms is in no way stepping on their namesakes; I use the terms as current day phenomenas. Do note that there are also as many people out there that do quality work in their "flips" - you need to know what to look for.
